Biased? Who, Me?! A Candid Look at the Problem of Implicit Bias

All of us have biases, and some biases have served us well as a species, protecting us from danger and enabling us to make routine decisions quickly.  Other biases have not served us well in a modern, diverse society, where the tendency to feel more comfortable with people who are like us creates blinders of which we are often unaware.  This presentation, by HLS Lecturer on Law David A. Hoffman, will explore the origins of biases, how they can be measured, and how we can counteract – in ourselves and others – those biases that stand in the way of progress against racism, sexism, homophobia, and other forms of discrimination in our society.  After a thirty-minute presentation, David will field questions and facilitate a discussion of these topics.

David A. Hoffman, Esq.

The John H. Watson, Jr. Lecturer on Law at HLS, where he has taught the mediation course since 2008.  David also teaches a course on Diversity and Dispute Resolution and a legal ethics course entitled Legal Profession: Collaborative Law.  He is the founding member of Boston Law Collaborative, LLC, and is a former chair of the ABA Section of Dispute Resolution.  He has published three books and numerous articles on dispute resolution.  David and his wife live in a cohousing community in Acton, Massachusetts.  They have five adult children and an adolescent cat.
